Rhythm Society: Lucky 13

Lucky 13 was our winter solstice event, and the theme challenged many of the expected norms that have remained constant for nearly 30 years. The event was on a Saturday to start — our events have always been on Fridays. We started and ended 4 hours earlier — ending at 2am instead of 6am was a welcome shift for me. Our fearless leader Star requested mash-ups — another deviation from the norm — and I complied.

This set kicks off the night post ceremony and wanders through many sounds and artist I’ve long loved. Starting off, a mash up of The Staples Singers “I’ll Take You There” set’s the tone. One of my all time favorite cuts from French downtempo sensation, Air hits a high with a Bossa Nova mash up treatment.

The mash up genre has always been a tricky one for me, as the staple of the genre is recent pop hits — not my favorite. But over the years I’ve found a nice stash of tracks that mash up some of my favorite music. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out.
