The Simulation

Modeling reality with AI to research and test hard problems

When I started in my new role last year, my general mandate was to show how AI could be used to rethink how people discover and connect with each other, then ultimately meet IRL. I think my team was surprised when I strongly recommended that we minimize the use of AI for our member experiences (our end users). My concern is that the presence of AI can erode trust and authenticity, especially when people first meet. I suggested the core value of AI would be in trust & safety mechanisms (member-facing) and accelerating innovation (internal-facing).

Vetting without meeting IRL is foreign to me — I’ve been married for 20 years, so I missed online dating entirely. But I recently spent two years as a co-founder building a social app for friendship and connection called Joinable. The problem space is in the same family, and there was one insight that surprised me, and I keep coming back to it.
